Steppin' Out Dance Studio Temporarily Moves Classes Online
We wanted to take a moment to share some exciting news with our entire newsletter community. As of Tuesday, March 31st, Steppin' Out will be moving its classes online for the duration of the "shelter in place" order. (If you are a current Steppin' Out family and you did not receive information about how to access these classes, please email Leila: leila@steppinoutsf.com.) We've made this move because we want to keep bringing dance into the lives of our students, even when we can't be physically together. Please wish us luck!
Our regular newsletter will be arriving in your inbox on Monday, April 6th, but this update was so juicy we just had to share it right away. More next week--perhaps we'll even have some updates!
Please take good care,
The Steppin' Out Team

Closure Notice
The situation in San Francisco has changed rapidly over the last few days. SFUSD has closed all schools, the San Francisco Public Library has closed, and other dance schools (including ODC) and children's activity centers have started to close. Therefore, to keep our staff, students, families, community, and city safe, Steppin' Out will be closed, effective immediately and continuing through March 27th. Our current plan is to resume classes on March 28th, but we will keep you posted if conditions prohibit us from doing so. To be clear, all classes are currently suspended, including those scheduled for tomorrow. We are very sorry that we have had to make this difficult decision.
Once we can get this project organized, we will be emailing each class a video of their performance dance so that students can practice at home. Please stay tuned for these messages and further updates as we are able.
We know everyone is feeling concerned and on edge these days, and we send our love. Please take care of your own health and that of your family as much as possible, and let's all help those we can help--and support small businesses, our neighbors, and ou community.
Summer Camp Registration Is Open! + Steppin' Out March News
We are so excited to announce our second-ever summer camp! This year we are offering three fun-filled weeks. See below for details.
In other studio news, March 9th is the last day to register for the spring semester as we are preparing for the upcoming performance. And speaking of the performance, we'll be measuring for costumes this month, so please make sure you child attends class regularly (it's also important not to get behind in the performance choreography). We have classes every single week from now until the end of May--we are NOT closing during spring break. Please come as often as you can.
Finally, we love parents and caregivers, but it's been getting very loud in the studio lately--and loud is no good for our dancers. You are encouraged.--well, let's call it gently nudged--to drop your dancers off at class and get a delicious cup of coffee during their class (we particularly like Robin's Cafe and Stable Cafe. Thanks for your understanding.
REGISTER FOR SUMMER CAMP!
Join us for camp this summer! Your campers will enjoy delightful and age-appropriate activities and surprises, including dance and yoga, dramatic and board games, a featured activity, and trips to our local park. Steppin' Out welcomes campers aged 5-10 for our weekday camp (9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Friday, with drop off as early as 8:30 a.m.). Our tuition of $350 a week includes all activities plus a healthy snack. Camp is offered for three weeks this summer, June 8-12, June 15-19, and August 3-7. Register for any or all!
"DROP IN FOR FREE" EXTENDED
For the first two weeks of March, dancers who are new to our studio and between ages 5 and 7 can visit our Wednesday 4 p.m. class one time for free! Please spread the word about this new Tap/Ballet Beginning 1 class with Teachers Zoe and Sonja, or, if you're ready, register now.
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: TENDU
Tendu, short for "battement tendu," is a technique movement from ballet that develops coordination and prepares dancers for grand battement (a dramatic ballet kick with a straight leg). Tendu literally means "tight" or "stretched," and it involves extending one leg away from the body until only the tip of its toe touches the floor. Dancers traditionally practice tendu to the front, the side, and the back. Have your dancer stand up straight in first position, then begin to extend one leg forward and straight until they can't move their leg any further without their toes coming off the ground. Sending energy into the floor through the standing leg can help them maintain balance. Remember to try all directions--and both legs!
WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY FLASH MOB
Accomplished Steppin' Out dancer Nina and Teacher Olivia will be participating in a flash mob on March 21st at 2 p.m. at Serramonte Center. Come support them and watch--or learn the choreography and join in!
QUICK TIP: MAKE UP A HAND-WASHING DANCE!
If your kids are getting bored counting to 20 while washing their hands, turn it into a dance. They can still wiggle their hips or stomp their feet while they scrub, scrub, scrub!
Performance Dates Announced + Steppin' Out February News
February is here, and that's means we've started spring semester! During this part of the year, we work on on choreography for the annual performance in May--and we begin measuring students for costumes! We want to make sure everyone knows that participation in the performance is not mandatory, so students can still continue to take class even if they are not performing (but if you won't be performing, please let us know as soon as possible so we can plan accordingly for costume ordering and staging).
We also have some important dates for you to put in your calendar; please see below.
DRESS REHEARSAL
Our dress rehearsal will take place on Saturday, May 16th. Dancers will be called for an hour (per class) between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. (advanced dancers will stay longer). The exact call time for each class will be announced closer to the date. Because we were unable to schedule dress rehearsal on a Sunday, all Saturday classes will be offered a make-up class on Sunday, May 17th. Details will be announced closer to time.
ANNUAL PERFORMANCE DATES
The performance dates have been set! The annual performance for 2020 will be on Saturday, May 30th (all dancers will be divided into two shows to keep the running time to two hours) and Sunday, May 31st (intermediate and advanced showcase only). Specific performance times will be announced closer to the date.
DROP IN FOR FREE
During the month of February, dancers who are new to our studio and between ages 5 and 7 can visit our Wednesday 4 p.m. class one time for free! Please spread the word about this new Tap/Ballet Beginning 1 class with Teachers Zoe and Sonja, or, if you're ready, register now.
SPRING REGISTRATION
Spring semester just started this past Saturday, February 1st. While many of our classes are full, some classes do have a few remaining spots. View our class schedule, register now, or contact Angela for assistance.
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: CHILD'S POSE
A yoga pose that can also be used by dancers, child's pose stretches the spine, hips, and ankles while lowering the heart rate. And don't let the name fool you--child's pose is great for all ages. To get started, kneel with the knees open wide enough to accommodate the torso, then use an exhale to lower the torso to the floor. If your children can't reach the ground, use a folded blanket or pillow to support their foreheads. Encourage them to relax their shoulders. Arms can be extended forward with palms down and elbows up for a more active stretch or released alongside the hips with palms up for a more passive rest. Stay as long as you like, then exit the pose feeling revitalized.
SEE LIVE DANCE: TEACHER SONJA IN "JUST AHEAD IS DARKNESS"
Older dancers may enjoy seeing Teacher's Sonja's latest show: "Just Ahead Is Darkness, Sharp & Fine’s new play for dance, is a family story, a ghost story, and a love story. Inspired by the bon dances of Hawaii, a Japanese-American tradition of remembering the dead, it combines dance, theater, and live music to trace the overlapping territories of memory, story, and truth."
QUICK TIP: DECORATE & HYDRATE
During the winter while many of us spend time in heated spaces, it's easy to get dehydrated. Letting your children decorate their water bottles with their dance class stickers may make it easier to motivate them to keep drinking.
Spring Registration + Happy New Year + Steppin' Out January News
Welcome to 2020! We have two very important reminders for our community: First, we are still in "fall semester" through the end of January, so please keep joining us for class all through this month. Second, registration is now open for our spring semester, which begins on February 1st. If you are a new family ready to enroll for spring, we do have some openings, including a brand new "Beginning I" class on Wednesday at 4 p.m. for dancers ages 5-7. Please take a look at our schedule--and please spread the word to those looking to dance this spring. Also, as a gentle reminder, many classes fill up fast, so please register as soon as possible to avoid disappointment.
Class Selection:
Continuing spring students may re-register for their fall time slot even if they are now a year older than the listed age.
If you would like to add a second or third class or select a new time slot for spring, please contact Angela for assistance.
New students may register for any age-appropriate class for which they meet the prerequisites listed on our "classes" page. If you aren't sure, please contact Angela for assistance.
New Teachers, Substitute Teachers, and Teacher Bios:
Steppin' Out is excited to welcome Zachary Isen, who will be teaching the Thursday danceABILITY Company Jazz class this spring. Zachary has an extensive teaching background and has taught at a variety of local organizations including Bay Area Children's Theater, the Urban School, and Oakland School of the Arts.
We are also thrilled to announce that Gabriella Olsen will be filling in for Emily Hansel during the months of January (end of fall semester) and February (start of spring semester) while Emily is on tour with her dance company. Gabriella comes to us from Myriad Music School & Dance Academy and has performed domestically and internationally. Emily will return to all of her classes at the start of March, but we hope Gabriella will stay involved in the studio after February.
For more about Zachary or Gabriella or any of the Steppin' Out teachers, please visit the Steppin' Out "About" page.

MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: PORT DE BRAS
"Port de bras" (French for "carriage of the arms") is a classical ballet term for the set positions our arms travel through as we dance. While we may often think of the movement of the feet as the focus of our work as ballet dancers, the work of the arms is equally important. To build strength, dancers can flow through a series of arm positions--any positions they've been using in class. Remind your dancers that strong arms come from the back, and ask them to activate their back strength especially by releasing their shoulders back and down. Pro tip: Classical music can really add to the mood when practicing port de bras.
DANCE IN THE NEWS: THE HISTORY OF MUSIC VIDEO DANCING
While it's a stretch to call this "news" since it came out last September, we think this clip of Jennifer Lopez and Jimmy Fallon taking us through the history of music video dancing in four glorious minutes is unmissable. Enjoy!
BIRTHDAYS AT STEPPIN' OUT
You don't have to gamble on the weather when you schedule your child's birthday at the studio at Steppin' Out. We offer delightful and customizable children's birthday parties, indoors where it never rains. Plan the party of your dreams, from basic to turn-key, without breaking the bank. Learn more or reserve yours now.
QUICK TIP: SET RESOLUTIONS TOGETHER
As we move into this new year, don't limit resolutions to individuals. Resolve together as a family--maybe to dance more in 2020!
See you at the studio--and don't forget to register for spring!
Happy Holidays + Winter Camp Reminders
Happy holidays! The studio is now closed and will remain closed through January 6th, but please don't forget to return to class on January 7th--the fall semester extends all the way through the rest of that month. All of us at Steppin' Out wish you the very best this holiday season.
While you're waiting for classes to resume in January, why not register for Steppin' Out's Winter Camp (for campers aged 5-10)? You can pick the days you need: 12/30, 12/31, 1/2, and 1/3 are all available. Camp runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., is priced at $65/day, and is practically guaranteed to bring winter joy to your dancers' hearts. Learn more or register now.
Winter Camp + Happy Holidays + Steppin' Out December News
Winter season means festive new dances! Ask your dancers to show you what they learn in class this month, which may include seasonal dances inspired by The Nutcracker, the new Frozensoundtrack, plain old "jingle bells," and more. And your dancers aren't just having fun on the dance floor--fall seasonal choreography also prepares dancers to transition from basics to more advanced moves as they build the dance language from which their spring choreography will emerge.
As another seasonal reminder, we will be closed for two weeks during winter break, but please don't forget to return to class in January! Fall registration extends all the way through that month, so return rested and ready to dance. And keep your eyes open for news about spring registration, which will begin in January.
REGISTER NOW FOR WINTER CAMP
Every year, Steppin' Out offers Winter Camp full of movement and adventures. Families register for only the days they need. This year, winter camp will be offered 12/30 and 12/31 as well as 1/2 and 1/3. Camp runs from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. and is priced at $65/day. Learn more or register now.
DECEMBER CLOSURE
The studio will be closed between December 22nd and January 6th for winter break--no classes will be held during those two weeks (but don't worry; you have already been pro-rated for missing those days). Please sign up for Winter Camp instead--or enjoy some family time.
WHICH NUTCRACKER?
Ready for the classic holiday ballet, The Nutcracker? Every year around this time, we remind you of our favorites of your many local options, including MFDP's version, featuring two Steppin' Out teachers!
1. The classic, featuring breathtaking performances and spectacular sets:
San Francisco Ballet Nutcracker
2. The 50-minute version, perfect for the younger crowd. We are so very proud of our teachers Emily Hansel and Sonja Dale, who have starring roles in this production:
Mark Foehringer's Nutcracker Sweets
3. The whimsical, audience-participation option:
Dance Along Nutcracker: Nutcrackers in Space
And finally, here's something to celebrate in Nutcracker news: "After Misty Comes Marie: Breaking Barriers in The Nutcracker"
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: MAXIE FORD
This month's movement is a tap step! While the "Maxie Ford" is for intermediate dancers and above, it's definitely achievable if you break it into steps and start slowly. To try it, step on the right foot, shuffle the left foot, jump onto the left foot, and knock the right toe to the back. This all happens in three counts: step on one, shuffle on and two, jump on and and knock on three. A few tips: 1) try it slowly at first, then gradually increase your speed, 2) try it on the right, then learn the whole thing starting left, 3) don't forget that tap can be practiced without tap shoes when necessary, and 4) view this very handy video demonstration for a visual reference.
WELCOME BACK, TEACHER ZOE
Teacher Zoe has returned to her normal schedule on Wednesdays and Saturdays! Steppin' Out would like to say a huge thank you to Maggie and Bella for covering Zoe's time away (and don't worry--Maggie and Bella will still be around!). Thank you also to our families for supporting our teachers, most of whom are working artists who sometimes need to be away (which also gives your children the wonderful opportunity to benefit from gaining new and different perspectives from other artists in the community).
QUICK TIP: STAY CALM AND BREATHE
This month's "quick tip" is for the parents for once! The holiday season can be absolute madness. When it gets overwhelming, take a breathing break: try exhaling for twice the duration of your inhales for an instant stress reducer.
Thanksgiving Closure + Steppin' Out November News
We're in full fall season. That means dancers begin to transition from basics to more advanced moves as we build a dance language we'll draw on for spring choreography. Ask your dancers to show you what they've been learning in class, and please read on for plenty of holiday-related news.
THANKSGIVING CLOSURE
The studio will be closed between November 25th and December 1st in observance of Thanksgiving--but don't worry; you have already been pro-rated for missing that week. Please enjoy family time.
WINTER CAMP SAVE THE DATE!
Stay tuned for registration information in our December newsletter.
BIRTHDAYS AT STEPPIN' OUT
Did you know that Steppin' Out offers delightful and customizable children's birthday parties, indoors where the rain can't ruin all the fun? Plan the party of your dreams, from basic to turn-key, without breaking the bank. Learn more or reserve yours now.
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: FALL
More than a pun, falling is an essential component of dance (and some say also of walking; falling is just basic weight transfer and that slight suspension between one state and the next). Learning to fall with grace can help your dancers find their centers. Practice this simple exercise: Have your dancers rise up on their toes till they can't get any taller, then lean forward, trying to hold their balance. When they can't hold it anymore, encourage them to take a few quick stutter steps to regain their center. After they've mastered falling forward, try each side--and then try falling back. Falling to music is even more fun.
DANCE IN THE NEWS: TEACHER ANGELA!!!
Have you seen this profile of Angela in Mission Local? We couldn't be more proud. Please check out People We Meet: Keeping Dance Alive.
QUICK TIP: WARM UP
With the weather growing colder, please make sure to have your dancers add a layer as they leave the studio--they'll be safer as they cool down, plus much cozier.
Happy Halloween! + Steppin' Out October News
October is one of our favorite months! We decorate the studio, bust out the jack-o'-lanterns and other seasonal props, and teach special Halloween-themed choreography for the entire month. This isn't just for fun--it's also so our dancers can get a low-stakes preview of spring, when we focus more on learning movement phrases and whole dances.
STUDIO CLOSED 10/31
Just a reminder that Thursday classes will not meet on Halloween day, 10/31 (but don't worry--you have already been pro-rated for missing that week). Please enjoy the celebration.
COME IN COSTUME!
We would love to see your costumes. Please invite your dancer to dress up in class starting on Thursday, 10/24, through Wednesday, 10/30. You may see some teachers dressed up too.
COSTUME AND LEOTARD SALE 10/6 11:30-1:30
Need a costume for this month? Or just some general dance wear? Steppin 'Out has unsold inventory from previous years' annual performances and we'd love to hand it off to you--so you can put it to good use! Leotards, costumes, and other dance wear are priced from $3-10. Most items are for dancers aged 3-10 and include everything from simple leotards and tutus to fabulous full costumes with sequins! Many items are new, but we also have a couple of second-hand items. Come check out the inventory, have a mimosa with Angela and Leila, or just hang out and chat. Sunday, October 6th, 11:30-1:30 p.m. at the studio (back parking lot will be open). This sale is open to the community, not just currently-enrolled students--please join us!
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: PUMPKINS! (TRIPOD HEADSTAND)
Appropriate for students seven years and older unless they have neck problems, the tripod (sometimes referred to as "the pumpkin") strengthens core muscles while relieving stress and increasing blood flow. Plus it's a lot of fun! Have your dancers start by sitting on their knees and placing their hands flat on the floor shoulder distance apart. The top of their heads should make the tip of a triangle when placed on the ground (rugs or thin blankets are ok for padding of the head, but please no pillows). Once their "base" is solid, ask them to slowly lift their hips over their shoulders and as they tighten their tummies and lift their knees onto their elbows. You can "spot" as they do this, or they can use the wall for extra support.
More advanced students can try a full headstand. Follow the same beginning steps as for tripod, but extend the legs upward to a full headstand pose. Make sure the body is aligned straight up and down and the hips are over the shoulders. For an added challenge and a deep core workout, move between "pumpkin" headstand and full extension several times.
DANCE AND RESEARCH: STUDY SHOWS DANCING REVERSES AGING
Yet another reason to love dance: while all forms of exercise can reverse the signs of aging in the brain, dance has been shown to have the greatest effect! Read aboutthe study that proved this.
QUICK TIP: MAKE A FRIEND
By the end of the year, each class will perform as a community, and it's never too early to start creating the connections that will make that possible. Meet someone new in class this month. That goes for parents as well as dancers.
Fall Starts Today! + Steppin' Out September News
Today is the first day of Steppin' Out's fall season! We can't wait to see all of our dancers back at the studio this week. Please see below for a recap of some important studio information you may have missed in our recent mailing to enrolled families.
COMMUNICATION
Steppin' Out sends general studio information each month in our newsletter, the one you are reading right now (powered by MailChimp). If you want to add another family member, they can sign up here.
We also send critical information (like priority registration access) to currently-enrolled families through Activity Hero. Please make sure you are monitoring the email addresses you use for Activity Hero to avoid missing important information.
PARKING
The studio offers very limited free parking in our side lot on a first-come, first served basis. Please park in designated spaces only (look for the "studio" signs versus the tenants' signs) only during your child's class time. It is especially important that we are good neighbors to the tenants who live in the building we share, so please do not park in the tenants' spots or block other cars or the back driveway (on 18th street) under any circumstances. Thank you for helping us continue to make this resource available to our community!
OBSERVATION POLICY
Drop off at the studio is highly encouraged (especially for dancers aged seven and older). This is to limit student distractions so that students may get the most out of their hour. We do love when extended family members come to visit and welcome parents to occasionally observe class, but we need to limit the number of regular spectators during class time as parents chatting and siblings playing have become quite distracting for our dancers and teachers given the spatial limitations of the studio. New families are welcome to observe as they become familiar with the studio. Children younger than seven may be dropped off too, depending on the comfort level of the parent and the child.
WHERE TO BUY CLOTHES AND SHOES
See below for some tips about getting what you need to be ready for class. If you're curious about our casual and supportive dress code, you can read it at the bottom of our tuition and policies page.
Shoes:
If you are buying new shoes, please buy black tap shoes and pink ballet shoes for girls and black dance shoes for boys. For teens, please buy black tap and jazz shoes, pink or nude ballet shoes, and nude character shoes (if needed). If you already have shoes or find some second hand, any color is fine!
We do have some tap and ballet shoes in the shoe bin for you to use on a first come, first-served basis. If you find a pair that fits, feel free to take it. If you've outgrown an old pair, we'd love your old shoes back so that another student might benefit from them.
Otherwise try:
Discount Dance for flat-rate shipping for shoes and other dance needs
SF Dance Gear in SOMA for both shoes and attire
Chloe's Closet in Bernal (for second-hand dance shoes)
Clothing:
Target has a dance section
Sears also offers dance and active wear
eBay and craigslist are good sources for second-hand dance attire
Don't forget to support our local dancewear store, SF Dance Gear
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: POINT (AND FLEX) YOUR TOES
If your dancers are getting excited about the first day of class, have them practice something simple at home that will also help them get ready to begin. Your dancers can start seated. Have them practice pointing and flexing their toes while extending their legs out in front of them. Ask them to sit up tall and then pull their toes back toward their faces while pushing out through their heels, then have them slowly point their toes away from their feet, curving their entire arch and extending through their toes. Ask them to move slowly...and then quickly. Right foot and left foot together.. then in opposition. Over time, they'll build stronger and more flexible feet for all aspects of their dancing, plus they'll build confidence for the first weeks of class.
DANCE IN THE NEWS
If you haven't heard about the recent controversy on Good Morning America (when a host madedismissive comments about Prince William studying ballet), the most important thing is to watch this beautiful affirmation of the importance of dance in response:300 people doing ballet in Times Square. We hope you'll share this video with your kids.
QUICK TIP: COME BAREFOOT!
Haven't had time to get shoes yet? No problem--just send your child to class barefoot as tights are too slippery without shoes.

PHOTOS & VIDEOS
2018-19 families have received an email through Activity Hero with information about how to download the performance videos. If you have not yet received this email, please contactLeila.
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: PAS DE BOURRÉE
Practicing the ballet step "pas de bourée" can help your dancers develop the contrast between plié (bending knees) and relevé (rising up on the toes) while encouraging them to lift from their cores. Even better, because pas de bourée involves a lively shift from side to side, it's a fun way to experience weight transfer. To try a pas de bourrée, break it down into three parts: 1) step your right leg behind your left in plié, 2) open your left leg into second position in relevé, and 3) step your right leg in front of your left back into plié. Once you've mastered it on the right side, try the left.
REMINDER: MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP WITH MAGGIE
Teacher Maggie is leading a special musical theater workshop for ages 12 and up! Join her THIS WEDNESDAY, August 7th, from 6-7:30 p.m. Angela and Leila will be there!. Learn more or register here.
REMINDER! SEE TEACHER SONJA ON STAGE
This August, Teacher Sonja will perform with Garret and Moulton Productions' "Four Acts of Light and Wonder" (appropriate for older children). Angela and Leila will be there on Friday--let us know if you're coming so we can say hi. Learn more or buy tickets now.
QUICK TIP: MORE MUSIC!
Help your child stay connected to rhythm by listening to lots of music these last few weeks of summer as we all get excited for classes to resume.

New students entering at the intermediate level or higher will have the opportunity to audition. To schedule an audition, please contact Angela.
PHOTOS & VIDEOS
2018-19 families will receive an email through Activity Hero later in July with information on how to download the performance videos and purchase photos. Please stay tuned.
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: TENDU
Tendu is a foundational ballet movement that helps dancers center themselves and build strength and control. It's a great move to practice in the off season to regain alignment. You can start a tendu from many positions, but first position is best for beginners. Standing in first position with heels together and hips outwardly rotated (so toes point out to whatever natural hip rotation is comfortable), lift from your center and begin to extend one leg straight forward until your heel rises off the floor. Continue until you've reached maximum extension with the toes of the extended foot still touching the floor. Then reverse the process, lifting from your center to return the leg underneath you. Repeat on the second side.
MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP WITH MAGGIE
Teacher Maggie is leading a special musical theater workshop for ages 12 and up! Join her on August 7th from 6-7:30 p.m. We're already scheming about how we can join in. Learn more or register here.
REMINDER! SEE TEACHER SONJA ON STAGE
This August, Teacher Sonja will perform with Garret and Moulton Productions' "Four Acts of Light and Wonder" (appropriate for older children). Learn more or buy tickets now.
QUICK TIP
Find the dance of "everyday life" this summer. Chassé, skip, and leap through regular activities to keep dance alive even during the break.
Announcing The Steppin' Out 2019-2020 Teaching Staff
Steppin' Out Dance Studio is thrilled to welcome Bella Montufar, who will be teaching alongside returning teachers Zoe Swenson-Graham, Sonja Dale, Emily Hansel, Maggie Connard, and studio owner and director Angela Rose Dorantes during the 2019-2020 season.
Bella Montufar
BELLA MONTUFAR has taught dance and gymnastics for six years at Pacific West Gymnastics, where she holds a certificate in Acrobatic Arts. Bella also performed with Bliss Dance Company. She grew up in the Bay Area and started her formal dance training at the age of 13 at Mission Dance and Performing Arts. Throughout her teen years, Bella studied ballet, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, tap, musical theatre, and acrobatics. Bella’s love for dance and children has made teaching a fun and rewarding experience. She is currently pursuing her BA in Communications Studies at San Francisco State University.
Bella will be joining the Steppin’ Out teaching staff in the fall of 2019.
Congratulations! + Steppin' Out June News
Congratulations, dancers! That was beautiful.. and inspiring... and entertaining... and moving... and just so much fun. We are super proud--and just generally jazzed--about all that you gave to this past weekend's performances, and we can't wait to see what you do next.
A huge shout out to our teachers and staff for making the show possible in every way large and small; to our parent volunteers, whose tireless work made everything run so smoothly; and to our supportive audience, for always being there for our dancers.
We'll miss you all this summer but look forward to seeing you after Labor Day.
All our love,
The Steppin' Out Team
WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?
Classes have ended for the 2018-19 season and Steppin' Out will be closed for the summer except for summer camp (see below). Go have fun and enjoy your break.
If you were in a show, you'll receive an email with instructions about how to download the performance videos once they are ready.
You'll also get notified about the process for ordering photos from our dress rehearsal photo shoot.
The fall schedule will be released in July and registration notification will happen through the newsletter in August, so watch this space--we hope you'll join us for the 2019-20 season, starting after Labor Day.
DON'T FORGET: STEPPIN' OUT'S FIRST-EVER SUMMER CAMP
Space is still available for summer camp! Camp is designed for children ages 5-12 and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (with drop off as early as 8:30 a.m.) Monday through Friday. Our tuition of $325/week includes all activities plus a healthy snack. Camp is offered for two weeks this summer, June 10-14 and June 17-21. Register for either or both!
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH (SUMMER EDITION): THE DAB
This summer, surprise your kids by knowing the hottest new move: "the dab." There's even a wikiHow for it! Now we just have to figure out how to get it into next year's choreography...
SEE TEACHER SONJA ON STAGE
This August, Teacher Sonja will perform with Garrett and Moulton Productions' "Four Acts of Light and Wonder" (appropriate for older children). Tickets are already on sale, and August might be the perfect time to return to that "dance mindset" before classes resume. You can also read more about the performance, which includes a community cast performing ball passing!
QUICK TIP
Summer can be a wonderful opportunity for downtime, but don't stop moving. Finding everyday opportunities to "dance" (while making dinner? while straightening up rooms?) will make it easier to return to class this fall.
You're invited!
Please join us for Steppin' Out's 2019 annual performances at the Everett Middle School Theater. All performances are free and open to our community. On-site parking is available for $10 (cash only). You can even purchase flowers at the show.
Come to one show or come to all:
Showcase A: Saturday, June 1st, 11 a.m.
Showcase B: Saturday, June 1st, 2 p.m.
Advanced Showcase/ Showcase C: Sunday, June 2nd, 5 p.m.
Come support dance, the arts in general, and our wonderful performers.
Performance Information + Steppin' Out May News
It's hard to believe we have only four weeks till performance time! Please be sure your dancers attend every class and rehearsal for the next few weeks--and please read on for important performance and costume information below.
COSTUMES
Costumes are ready to be paid for and taken home—please check this list for your child’s costume. Once costumes make it home, please take them out of their bags, iron anything that needs ironing, and hang anything that need to be hung. Keep all costume pieces together so nothing gets lost (a garment bag is a great way to store your costume). Please be sure to bring all costumes to the dress rehearsal on Sunday, May 19th as the dancers need to practice in them and photographs will be taken. Don't forget that we sell tights for $5 at the front desk.
We provide costume and performance fee assistance to anyone who needs it--just talk to Angela. Also please note that Wednesday 4 p.m. (back), Saturday 11 a.m. (back), and Sunday noon (front) are still finalizing costumes--stay tuned!
ACCESSORIES - HAIR - MAKE UP
Any accessories such as hair bows or flowers should be wore either in the center of the hair or on the right side. Dancers may wear their hair in any style they want, as long as hair is brushed. Preteen, teen, and adult dancers should try on their costumes at home and determine what undergarments are needed. Please choose clear or nude colored straps on any undergarment that might show (and please match your own skin tone to the degree possible). Make up should be worn according to the Steppin' Out make up guidelines.
PERFORMANCE INFORMATION
Double check your dancer's performance day and time (the specific line up for each show will be released closer to show time) . Call time is 45 minutes prior to show time and each show will run about 1.5 hours. Dancers should arrive with their hair and make up already ready according to the guidelines. If your dancer is in both the 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. shows on June 1st, please make sure to pack a lunch or have a plan for a quick meal in between. Every show will be recorded and a special link will be emailed to each performer, so remind your dancers that they aren't just on stage--they're on camera!
DURING THE SHOW
All dancers will sit with their class in a designated area of the theater, chaperoned by a parent volunteer. They will be able to watch the show from these seats, and the Steppin' Out staff will be able to find them when it's their time to go on stage. Once a class has performed its first dance, the dancers will be brought back to their seats. Parents of children under the age of eight must then assist their children with any necessary shoe or costume changes before the next dance (please meet them in the hall and work as quietly as possible). At the end of the show, all dancers will go on stage for a final company bow (parents can pick up from the stage at the end of the show to congratulate dancers and take photos).
Parent volunteers will keep kids safe and quiet as they watch the show. If you would like to be a parent volunteer, please sign up at the studio. We need at least two parents per class for each class with students under the age of eight.
DRESS REHEARSAL DETAILS (PLUS PHOTO SHOOT!)
Our dress rehearsal will be on Sunday May 19th at Everett Middle School (free parking is available in the school yard). Dancers only attend during their class' scheduled hour (unless otherwise noted). Natalia Perez of Natalia Perez Photography will be taking photographs of our dress rehearsal. Natalia's photographs will be available for purchase, so please make sure your dancers attend in full costume (including hair and make up, which should be completed before you arrive). You may also want water bottles and sweatshirts for your dancers to wear while waiting for their turns.
PERFORMANCE FEE NOW DUE
Each dancer who will be participating in the annual performance will be charged a performance fee. This fee covers free admission for an unlimited number of guests and a free video link to the recorded version of the show. Fees are $40 per dancer (for multiple dancers from the same family, add $10 for your second dancer and $5 for your third [or more!] dancer/s, etc.). Please see the front desk to pay by check, cash, or credit card.
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: BOW
Remind your dancers that when they bow, they are still dancing! While there are a variety of bows being used depending on the class, each dancer can practice their style to get more familiar with it before the show. Practice whenever possible. Finished homework? Take a bow. Set the table? Take a bow. Told a good joke? Take a bow!
INVITE A FRIEND
Your performance fee covers an unlimited number of guests, so invite a friend to the show. Keep your eyes out at the studio for flyers to hand out to friends and family. Please also let your guests know that parking in the school yard is $10 and that flowers will be available for purchase during the performance.
QUICK TIP: SOOTHE THEIR NERVES
We've already been talking about "butterflies" in class, but if you sense your child might have a hard time on performance day, consider:
Taping a cut-out heart on the inside of their shoe or costume to remind them you are pulling for them.
Choosing a favorite stuffed animal to watch the show from their seat in the audience (please note that toys and stuffed animals are not allowed on the stage during the performance).
Holding a "practice show" at home so your child can get used to the feeling of being "on stage."

Dress Rehearsal + Steppin' Out April News
The dress rehearsal schedule has been released! Please mark your calendars for your time slot and review details below so your family can get the most out of this important activity. Also, keep your eyes peeled for performance flyers (arriving at the studio soon!)
(Please note that the parking lot will be available during our dress rehearsal at no charge; however, there will be a $10 cash-only fee for parking during the performance.)
DRESS REHEARSAL DETAILS (PLUS PHOTO SHOOT!)
Our dress rehearsal will be on Sunday May 19th at Everett Middle School. Dancers only attend during their class' scheduled hour (unless otherwise noted). Rehearsal provides a great opportunity for dancers to get a feel for the stage and will add to the excitement of the performance. We are very excited to announce that Natalia Perez of Natalia Perez Photography will once again be capturing the magic on stage the day of our dress rehearsal!
TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL DRESS REHEARSAL
1) Please arrive on time. We have over 200 dancers and only a short amount of time for each class to practice. Your call window is an hour, but we may be able to dismiss some dancers earlier if we stay on schedule. You will share your hour with other classes, so please bring something to do while you wait.
2) Dancers should wear their costumes and all accessories. This is also a great way to verify that they have everything they need.
3) The school parking lot will offer free parking during the rehearsal.
4) Dancers may wear make up to the dress rehearsal as our photographer will be capturing the moment.
5) The dress rehearsal is an opportunity for the dancers to get up on stage and practice before the big day--plus it's a lot of fun!
COSTUMES
Costumes are beginning to arrive and fittings will take place in the studio over the next month. Once all the costumes are complete, a costume price list will be available. Please let Angela know should you need costume assistance.
MOVEMENT OF THE MONTH: LEAP
We all know that April showers bring May flowers, but they also leave us with a lot of puddles. Practice your leaps outside the studio so shoes can stay clean! Here are six tips for great leaps.
STEPPIN' OUT'S FIRST-EVER SUMMER CAMP
Space is still available for summer camp! Camp is designed for children ages 5-12 and runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. (with drop off as early as 8:30 a.m.) Monday through Friday. Our tuition of $325/week includes all activities plus a healthy snack. Camp is offered for two weeks this summer, June 10-14 and June 17-21. Register for either or both!
THANK YOU MAGGIE AND MELISSA & WELCOME BACK ZOE!
Steppin' Out wants to extend its gratitude to our wonderful long-term subs, Maggie and Melissa, who covered for Zoe while Zoe was out. Thank you for being incredible additions to our studio! We can't wait to work with you again. And Zoe, we're thrilled to have you back--we've missed you!
REMINDER: ALICE IN WONDERLAND
Teacher Sonja and Teacher Emily are both featured in the Mark Foehringer Dance Project's production of Alice in Wonderland, which runs April 6th through 14th at the Fort Mason Center. Go see our amazing teachers in action--get more information or buy tickets now!
QUICK TIP: ASK!
Ask your dancers what part of the performance they are most excited about. Visualizing it in advance will help calm nerves.
